Coleraine Jig is named after a town in Northern Ireland, and that geography actually carries some weight. Some players at sessions in the Republic have been known to sit out when someone calls it, simply because it's considered a Northern tune. There's a whole political undercurrent to what gets played where. The tune itself is musically sneaky, with the A-part settling into minor pretty comfortably, but the B-part suddenly lifts into what feels like a brighter, almost Dorian-flavored space before slipping back down. this shift is what really makes this tune, so lean into it rather than blasting through.
